C H A R T E R
A performance based competition for young instrumentalists to gain exposure and recognition on their chosen instrument, and secure financial support to further their studies.
The competition was first held in 1991 as a National music competition for young instrumentalists aged between 17 and 25 years. A separate Regional section was added in 2005 for Geelong and environs only, aged up to and including 18 years.
Regional applicants undertake an audition in front of a panel of experienced musicians. Up to 12 finalists are selected for the Finals concert. National applicants submit a filmed audition from which 8 finalists are selected. All instruments (except vocals) are welcome.
The Trust of the Competition adopt the edict that "by reaching the finals, all finalists are winners" and must now extend their technical and performance skills to an adjudication panel and audience to secure one of the offered prizes. The Trust and adjudication panel expect a high level of technical ability as standard. Equal importance is placed on musicianship, performance flair and audience engagement.
